Trois Freres Shaman
Also called, "Le Sorceire" in France, this cave painting dates to about 18,000 B.C.E. The painting shows a man dressed in animal skins and antlers, presumably dancing or enacting a ritual related to the success of the hunt. From modern stone age societies, we have learned that rituals are often performed as a sort of expiation for the taking of life in a hunt, to reverence the animals who will be killed and - in effect - ask their cooperation in giving their lives so that our own lives may be sustained.
