All my canvases are 100 % cotton, double primed with acid free acrylic sizing.
This insures long life to the finished work. Over time canvas can react with the paints, causing discoloration or flaking. Acid free sizing prevents this deterioration. On the rare occasions that I use masonite, it is noted as such and acid free acrylic primer is also used to prepare the surface.
I use Golden Brand Acrylic paints exclusively.
I believe that Golden has the highest quality standards of any acrylic paint available. Since the folks at Golden pride themselves on working directly with artists, their products show a remarkable understanding of the technical possibilities of acrylic paints. Thus I am offered more artistic choices.
For many years I used oil paints. If you look at the old masters, you will often notice fine lines or cracks. Over time, the oil base becomes hard, but the canvas remains sensitive to humidity and temperature. Thus, as the canvas stretches and contracts, fine cracks appear on the painting. Since acrylics have a polymer (or plastic) base, they have a degree of natural "give" not found in oils. And due to the technical advances in acrylics over the last twenty years, I can achieve all the same effects in acrylics as I can in oils, plus some delightful and exciting possibilities *not* available in oil paints. And you as an art collector can be assured of a lasting investment.
