The Long Man of Wilmington
Chalk figures have been preserved on English hillsides for centuries, perhaps millenia. In most cases, the residents of the nearest village annually cut back the grass below the level of the topsoil to reveal the white chalk beneath.
There is much controversy over the dating of these chalk figures, some are believed to date back to the stone age. Others are not mentioned in written history until fairly late, such as the 1700's. Since they must be tampered with by each successive generation or disappear into the landscape, they may have endured changes from their original design. We may never know.
In any case, they are striking figures which represent the cooperation of the people to preserve the sacred on the land they share.
This piece is acrylic on canvas and measures approx. 12"x16".
